The present lecture focuses on the lack of inclusion and equity on the scientific field of researchers whose native language is other than English; this situation becomes even more complicated when we academics are women and come from a Latin American background. Faced with this reality, those of us who write science from the so-called intellectual peripheries find ourselves doomed to double discrimination: on one hand we are unable to find leading scientific research in our own language, and on the other we have become forced to write our own research in a language different than our own. This situation places an extra burden over us, as we are required to learn and specialize on a high-level English first, to try and be part of the scientific field, which many do not have the means to do. This limitation imposes a barrier, not only for researchers but for authorities, government officials, and most important, for citizens who are in need to know about the latest discoveries in a plethora of scientific disciplines. This holds especially true for those who have the urgent need to coexist with risks that can potentially cause harm to people and structures. That is the case of natural phenomena, my area of expertise, as the communication of the knowledge that surrounds the danger needs to be transmitted as efficiently and broadly as possible. When threat and vulnerability collide with lack of proper education and good management of risk communication, people become more prone to suffer from crisis, disasters, and catastrophes. All of this while scientists who research in other languages are excluded from training, bibliographic material, funds to carry out our investigations and communicate those findings, and even must deal with international peers who refuse to work with non-English published works. The consequences of the lack of proper communication and are that science continues to be possessed by only a privileged few and can not achieve universality, as it is supposed to. As of today, science and scientific knowledge are not used to benefit all humanity and knowledge remains elitist; but it is our duty to create and share with all people, in their various languages as a fundamental step to build a responsible and equitable citizenship.
